Day by day program
Day 1: In the morning welcome of the travellers at the international airport of Entebbe. Drive to Kisoro (8 hours). Lunch on the way. Dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Trekking on the 3 volcanoes of Mgahinga National Park begins. Mt. Sabinyo a.k.a. "old man's teeth" (3669 m) offers 3 challenging peaks to climb. It takes 8 hours for a round trip to cover the 14 km stretch with a height gain of 1300 meters. On the top of the 3 rd peak you will be at the border between Rwanda, Congo and Uganda. Dinner and overnight at Traveller's Rest Hotel.
Day 3: Morning departure to climb Mt. Gahinga a.k.a. "small pile of stones" (3474 m) that takes its name from the small piles of stones found in the fields called "gahinga". On the 6 hours round trip hikers will pass through pure Bamboo forests. Today trail is 8 km long with a height gain of 1100 meters.
Day 4: Early in the morning trekking on Mt. Muhavura a.k.a. "the guide" (4127 m) that provides some of the best views of the country. The hike takes 8 hours round trip to cover 12 km and 1700 meters of height difference. Dinner and relax evening at Kisoro.
Day 5: Morning drive to Kasese through Echuya forest. Lunch on the way. Dinner and overnight at Kasese.
Day 6: Start of Rwenzori climbing. Rwenzori mountain range is the highest in Africa with the third highest peak on the African continent and is 120 km long and 48 km wide. First trekking day after a briefing with the park rangers you will move from 1646 meters on sea level to Nyabitaba hut at 2632 m with a trail of 10 km and 5 hours of walking. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 7: Leave Nyabitaba and take the central circuit loop anticlockwise. The trail leads to the crossing point of rivers Mubuku and Bujuku, difficult to pass in the past but easy today thanks to a bridge. After a slippery and difficult path you will reach Nyamuleju hut at 3000 meters a simple shelter among rocks. It's better to hike for other 3 hours and reach John Matte hut at 3414 meters and spend the night. From Nyabitaba to John Matte 7 hours of hiking are required.
Day 8: The third trekking day will lead you to Bujuku hut after 5 hours of hiking passing through the Bigo bog where there is an old shelter. Bujuku hut is located at 3962 meters near the Nujuku lake in a valley among 3 mountains: Mt Stanley, Mt Baker and Mt Speke. 5 hours are necessary from John Matte to Bujuku.
Day 9: Leave Bujuku the path will lead to a very narrow pass on the valley. After having reached the observation point overlooking Mt Speke, Lake Bujuku and Mt baker hike up to the Scott Elliot pass at 4372 m to reach the camp at Lake Kitandara (4023) or the Elena shelter at 4430 meters if you opted the optional activity to ascend Margherita and/or Alexandra peaks on Mt Stanley. From Bujuku to Kitandara it takes 5 hours of "walking".
Day 10: Some people consider the fifth trekking day as hard as the second! After crossing Fresh Field pass head for the new Guy Yeoman hut at 3261 meters. In case of fog or bad weather it could be hard to follow the trail and remember that the last part is full of bogs. Not less than 6 hours are necessary to complete the trail. Before Guy Yeoman hut there are other two shelters: Bujongolo and Kaijongo. Bujongolo is well known for having being the base camp of Luigi di Savoia, Duke of Abruzzi who conquered and fully explored the Rwenzori in 1906.
Day 11: The sixth day on Rwenzori is dedicated to descend to the camp of Nyabitaba. On the descent there are some tricky points since the terrain is often slippery and boggy. After Kichunchu rock the trail will become easier passing through bamboo forests interesting to many birdwatchers. Usually 5 or 6 hours are enough to reach Nyabitaba from Guy Yeoman.
Day 12: The seventh day return to the Rwenzori National Park headquarter in 3 hours. After a well earned rest with all the trekking group, porters and guides drive to the near Fort Portal and relax on one of the many crater lakes. Dinner and overnight at Fort Portal.
Day 13: Return to Entebbe and departure of travellers.
